Thus, when women’s hormone secretion decreases rapidly, you lose your balance of happy hormones. They are called serotonin and calcitonin gene-related peptides (CGRP) in the brain. When you have reduced these hormones, it causes inflammation of the nerves. Dilation of blood vessels happens and leads to headaches.

Iron deficiency anemia

Women tend to get deficient in iron. Mainly, they lose blood from menstruation, so they must take more iron than necessary. If this condition persists, it will eventually lead to anemia. 

Anemia is a condition in which there are few red blood cells in the blood, and the red blood cells play a role in carrying oxygen, resulting in fatigue, dizziness, and cold feet.

Taking a bath warms your body

Soaking your body in the bath instead of taking a shower is one of the best ways to improve your sensitivity to cold.

Let’s take a bath in about 100 °F of the water. It’s a good idea to soak in hot water for a little longer until you sweat slowly.

The parasympathetic nerves work to widen blood vessels and improve blood circulation. Let’s relax and warm from the core of your body.

Exercise

Exercise promotes metabolism and blood circulation

To improve blood flow is to promote metabolism. Exercise is the most effective way to boost metabolism. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Light walking is fine.

In your daily life, it’s enough to walk a little more or do a simple stretch. In particular, stretching before bedtime will improve blood circulation, increase body temperature, and help you sleep well.

Please try while moving your body a little more in your daily life.

Diet

Eat more warm food to increase blood circulation

Some foods warm the body and cool the body. Try to eat more foods warm it to improve blood circulation and coldness.

Foods that warm you: Root vegetables such as ginger, green onions, garlic, and burdock make you warm.

These vegetables grow in cold regions. And black foods like sesame, black beans, and azuki beans are also warm you up.

Foods that cool you down: Vegetables from hot areas such as tomatoes and cucumbers are cool vegetables. Sugar and artificial sweeteners, butter, margarine, snacks, chocolate also cool you down.

However, be aware that just because you are cold does not mean eating only warm foods. Try to eat a well-balanced diet. When you eat cold foods, I recommend cooking them like soup or miso soup rather than eating them raw.

Massage

Fingernail massage: Massage at the corner of the fingernail improving blood circulation throughout the body, reduces stiff shoulders, relieves tiredness and tiredness, and raises body temperature.

These points are actually acupuncture points called Jing Well points, which effectively improve immune systems and increase body temperature.

  1. Grip the corner of the nail by the other side of the thumb and index.

First of all, sympathetic nerves and parasympathetic nerves arise from the spinal cord segments.

Thus, vagus nerves are easily affected by digestion or stress.

How Headaches Caused By Digestive Problems? 

As I said, the vagus nerve carries 75% of parasympathetic nervous function. 

It travels from our brainstem to the intestines, including other organs and glands.  

The Vagus nerve runs right behind the Sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) and right in front of the scalenes muscles in the neck.  

In addition, the spinal accessory nerve also goes to the SCM and upper trap muscles.  Once it is irritated, it can cause muscle tightness.

Neck muscle tightness which is irritated by vagus nerves, causes headaches because a pinched nerve occurs when a nerve is irritated or compressed by the tightness of the neck.

Pain is called stagnation of Qi (energy) and blood in the meridian and the channel. 

When you have bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhea, it affects the meridian that goes to your neck and head.

The left side of the neck stiffness mostly indicates the digestion system because the spleen and stomach are located on the left side.

Excess Heat in the intestines

Excess Heat is mostly associated with inflammation. 

Other symptoms are red eyes, thirsty, dry mouth, bad breath, swelling, pain, burning sensation, dark-yellow urination, and irritability.  

Deficient Heat in the Intestines

On the other hand, deficient Heat happens when lack of nutrients in the body, or essences. In traditional Chinese medicine, the body is balanced with Yin & Yang. 

First of all, yin is like water, and Yang is like fire.  When you are lack water, you get heat signs called Yin deficient heat because you have no function to cool your body. 

Most likely, it’s a chronic stage when you have deficient heat.  Other symptoms are night sweats, thirsty, fatigue, low appetite, and scanty urination.

I would assume you briefly understand how we diagnose the constipation.  

You might wonder where is the heat coming from.  

Several reasons why you get heat in the systems such as stress, diet, age, side effects from the medication, and lifestyle.  

Stress (Liver Qi Stagnation)

Stress is always one of the main reasons why you get constipation.  In traditional Chinese medicine, we diagnose Liver Qi Stagnation.  As you know, Qi is the energy.  Yet, what is the liver?  

In TCM, It’s not the same as the liver in Western Medicine. 

The liver controls the functions of the body like muscles and tendons, regulates energy (Qi). It is also associated with the autonomic nervous system (emotion).  In addition to these, this organ also stores blood.

And, I want you to pump the air in it as much as you can until the air won’t go anymore.  Because of the pressure inside the ball, it creates heat, then eventually it will be burst.  the same thing happens in your body.  

Once this phenomenon happens in your body, most likely you get irritability or anger as well.

Diet (Food Stagnation)

Of course, when you eat too much, food stagnated because you can’t digest food properly. 

In addition, you might get other symptoms like burping, heartburn, bloating, and gas.  

Age (Yin Deficient Heat)

Yin is like water.  Water is the vital essence.  As you age, you lose the essence. 

Therefore, this is mother nature and you can’t avoid it.

Now, I would like to explain how to treat Excess Heat and Deficient heat with Chinese herbs.  

Constipation from stress

Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang

Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang is a classical Chinese herbal formula used to clear heat and as a sedative. 

It treats a variety of internal and emotional patterns, especially those whose symptoms are fullness in the chest, irritability, and palpitations. 

This formula contains Huang Qin, a Chinese skullcap, which clears heat from the lower body.  And, Da Huang is one of the major herbs for purgative.  

Constipation from food stagnation

Bao He Wan

Bao He Wan is intended to treat acute upset of the digestive tract with belching, acid reflux, a full feeling in the stomach, bloating, nausea, abdominal cramping, and constipation from overeating, poor food, or hangover. 

One of the chief herbs is Shan Zha which is Chinese Hawthorn fruit, and it has the function of dispersing and moving the stagnation of food, and clear heat.

Ba Xian Chang Shou Wan

Ba Xian Chang Shou Wan is for chronic disorders and aging marked by significant yin deficiency in the lungs and kidneys.

This formula nourishes Yin and the essence to lubricate the dryness in the intestines.

Its primary pattern signs and symptoms are accompanied by typical yin deficiency heat patterns such as weakness in the lower body, tidal fever, dry mouth, dry skin, dizziness, night sweats, hot palms, and soles, tinnitus, and constipation from dryness.

Having a baby can be a precious time of life, but according to the study, one out of eight couples in the U.S has trouble with infertility.

Eat well, sleep well and poop well.

These are the primary keys to become healthy. 

Without these, you won’t be able to live a good quality of life.  

However, because modern people eat badly, sleep poorly, and don’t have a bowel movement every day, natural Chinese herbs have the potentials to help people suffer from this bothersome problem, called constipation.

Because the “gut” is the second brain, if you don’t go to the bathroom every day, you might get a foggy brain and be unable to concentrate, even giving you anxiety and depression. 

So, your intestines have to be clean, and your gut bacteria need to be well-balanced, which is called gut flora. 

More gut flora is in the small intestine than the large intestine.

In the stool, there is 30% gut flora contained.

In traditional Chinese Medicine, there are several causes why the stool is stuck in the intestine and won’t move.  

There are two types of constipation like excess and deficiency. 

Excess constipation happens in the acute stage.

However, deficient constipation occurs in the chronic stage when you lack something that you need in your life.  

Excess Constipation

  • Food Stagnation
  • Heat

Deficient Constipation

  • Qi, Blood, Yin deficiency
  • Yang deficiency

Food Stagnation

Because you have indigestion in your digestive system, the food you ate stuck in the intestines, and the intestines won’t move it.  

Heat

There are several reasons you get heat in the intestines, such as stress, diet, etc.  

Due to Large Intestine heat, stools get dried out, hard, and challenging to pass.  

Deficient Qi, Blood, Yin (Essence)

Qi is the energy of the body and carries the blood. 

If you don’t have enough Qi, you have no energy to push the stool and gives you bowel movement.  

Yang deficiency (Cold-induced)

Yang is like fire, and yin is like water. 

When yin and yang are balancing with each other, you are healthy.

However, when you are lack yang (vital energy), you will get cold-type symptoms like frequent urination, low energy, low back pain, and constipation. 

Because if Yang-Qi is deficient, you can no longer warm the body fluids or moisten the intestinal tract.

As a result, Yin-Cold gels in the intestines get blocked the peristalsis movement.

Chinese Herbs

Based on the Oriental Medicine diagnosis, we select the different herbs for constipation.

For example, when you have no energy to have a bowel movement, we prefer nourishing herbs.

On the other hand, when you are in acute constipation, we choose the purgative formula.

Niu Bang Zi

Da Huang, also known as Rhubarb Root, is also called Greater Yellow Root. 

It is a potent purgative to activate Blood Circulation and resolve stasis. 

The action of this herb helps to drain Heat, purges excess, reduces Damp and Blood Heat, invigorates the Blood, and removes stagnation. 

Fire dries out the intestine causing constipation, so this herb helps cool down the intestines – constipation leads to other toxic symptoms such as acne.  

He Shou Wu (Fo-Ti)

Even though you have slept well, are you feeling tired from the morning?  

Do you have symptoms like tiredness all the time, heavy body, lethargy, depression, and irritability? 

If you can’t keep up with anything you want, you might have one of the major medical conditions called adrenal fatigue syndrome.  

Adrenal fatigue syndrome is the most common cause of chronic fatigue.  It develops from stimulating the adrenal gland too much for a long period of time so that the gland won’t be able to secrete cortisol by itself and boost up your energy.

As a result, your energy goes down rapidly and makes you feel tired all the time.

Causes of Adrenal Fatigue

The adrenal glands are organs that fight for stress. When you feel stress, you may not be aware of it.

But, the adrenal glands secrete large amounts of cortisol to cope with the stress.

If it’s a short period, there’s nothing wrong with it. But, if you get stressed out for an extended time, the adrenal glands become exhausted.

Consequently, you won’t be able to secrete the sufficient amount of cortisol you need.

Thus, cortisol plays a significant role as an energy booster. One of the functions of cortisol is to control mental and physical stress.

In addition, cortisol also raises blood sugar, produces energy (resulting from raising blood sugar), raises blood pressure, controls psychological and physical stress, and suppresses inflammation and allergies.

The symptoms of adrenal fatigue syndrome

  • Easy to get tired
  • I can’t get up in the morning.
  • Easy to get cold 
  • Inflammation is likely to occur in various parts of the body and is difficult to heal.
  • Depression, poor memory, and poor concentration.
  • Hives, dermatitis, rhinitis, and asthma 
  • Arthritis and rheumatism develop
  • Palpitation 
  • Insomnia

Nutrients of the hormone” are needed to restore adrenal function and allow sufficient secretion of its own cortisol.  

To synthesize cortisol, protein, vitamin C, vitamin B, Zinc, vitamin E, vitamin A are required.  Most patients with adrenal fatigue are deficient in these nutrients due to long-term stress-induced digestive and absorptive disorders and increased demand for nutrients due to stress.   

One of the essential nutrients is vitamin C.  The organs with the highest levels of vitamin C in the human body are the brain and adrenal glands.  In other words, these organs are the ones that need the most vitamin C.  

Unlike other animals, humans cannot synthesize vitamin C in the body. When you are stressed out, more vitamin C is consumed to synthesize cortisol, and it depleted vitamin C out of the adrenal gland. 

Nutritions for Adrenal

Proteins

We want to eat good foods for the adrenal glands as “good quality proteins” and “good quality fat,” which are materials for hormones and tissues.  You can choose chicken, pork, and grass-fed beef.  When you want to eat fish, choose blue fish such as horse mackerel, sardines, and saury, containing omega 3 (n-3) fatty acids.   

 In addition to the blue-backed fish listed above, flaxseed oil and sesame oil, which contain α-linolenic acid, which is also a type of omega-3 fatty acid, are recommended as high-quality fat.  “When eating unheated foods such as dressings, omega 3 oils are mainly fine, but they are fragile against heat and easily oxidized. When you cook, coconut oil or olive oil, rich in heat-resistant medium-chain fatty acids, is recommended.

The liver is an amazing organ that detoxifies harmful substances such as heavy metals. However, since people get tired of the liver due to stress, they could not detoxify toxins. Then, they spread to each organ and cause inflammation, including adrenal glands.  Let’s eat plenty of flavored vegetables, herbs, and spices such as garlic, onions, ginger, and cilantro, which are said to have a detoxifying effect.

The point is to choose various kinds of vegetables.  Phytochemicals, which are contained in pigments, aromas, bitterness, have antioxidant and anti-allergic effects. Indeed, they are useful for protecting liver function. We recommend you to eat vegetables in as many colors as possible.

Vitamin & Minerals 

In addition to other vitamins, the Vitamin B complex, which makes large quantities in hormone production, is a nutrient that people with adrenal fatigue tend to lack.  Let’s eat brown rice, pork, eggs, shellfish, and seaweed that contain vitamin B complex. In particular, folic acid, a type of vitamin B, is an important component for hematopoiesis and making new cells, such as shellfish, eels, etc.  It’s a good idea to actively take green and yellow vegetables, such as brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, celery, green beans, kale, spinach. 

Similarly, people with adrenal fatigue tend to be a lack minerals as well.  They have weak intestines, and it can lead to inadequate absorption of minerals.  It would help if you had all the nutrients, such as zinc, magnesium, and calcium. These minerals regulate the immune system, help enzymes for hormone metabolism and relieve irritability.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Perspective

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we consider the adrenal glands as a Kidney.  The kidney in TCM is an organ to store prenatal energy that your mother gave you.  Once your pre-natal energy is depleted, it isn’t easy to replenish it.  To gain or restore the energy, you have to get it from the digestive system.  

Qi (energy) can be divided into two, prenatal and postnatal.

Pre-natal energy

  • The energy that you are born with
  • The energy that deletes by the age
  • The energy that store when you sleep at night
  • The energy that damaged by stress

Post-natal energy

  • Energy after birth
  • The energy that you gain from food
  • The energy that also damaged by the environment & stress

Chinese Herb

Headaches are one of the most annoying disorders of all time for American people. 

In America, 45 million Americans are suffering from headaches each year.

One in every six people of the population has had headaches in the United States.  

Here, I would like to talk about the mechanisms of headaches and kinds of headaches and how to treat Chinese medicine remedies such as by using acupuncture points and Chinese medicines like kudzu tea.  

Western Perspective of Headaches

You need to identify several different headaches, such as sinus headaches, cluster headaches, tension headaches, and migraines.

  • Sinus headaches – headaches in the behind the eyebrow and cheekbone.
  • Cluster headaches – located in and around one eye.
  • Tension headaches – one of the most common headaches, which is like a band squeezing the head.
  • Migraine – usually in one side of the head and may cause nausea and visual changes.

Chinese medicine perspective of Headache

On the other hand, in TCM, we differentiate headaches into different types

  • Yang Ming Headache – pain in the frontal head and forehead
  • Shao Yang Headache – temporal head
  • Jue Yin Headache – top of the head

Headache Types in Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are different causes of headaches, such as external pathogens like wind-cold or wind-heat, or stress, or digestive problems. 

These causes stiffen the muscle around the head and neck cause headaches.  

Acute Headaches

  • External pathogens like cold, dampness, heat, and wind attack your body because of low immune systems.

Chronic Headaches

  • Qi deficiency headache – a headache because you have low Qi (Energy).  This headache is associated with fatigue, low appetite, and pale faces.  
  • Blood deficiency headache – this headache happens because you have a lack of blood in your system.  This type of headache gives you sharp pain in the head and pale skin.  
  • Phlegm-dampness headache – this type of headache is associated with heartburn and nausea or vomiting.  
  • Liver fire headache – When you are raged or angry, your headache is triggered.  
  • Food stagnation headache – Headache after eating. It is associated with burping and yawning.  

What can We do with Chinese Medicine for Headache?

In Traditional Chinese medicine, there are two main treatments, such as Acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapy.

Acupuncture & moxibustion

Acupuncture & moxibustion is a therapy that helps the patient to flow Qi and energy smoothly and removes the pathogens that cause the disease.

The human body has multiple pathways called meridians that run through Qi and blood. In a healthy body, Qi and blood flow continuously.

But, When the paths are obstructed or stagnated, a person gets sick.
