  • I have constipation or diarrhea
  • No matter what I do, I can’t lose weight

If your feet so cold quickly and easily, it is cold sensitivity, and if you keep ignoring these symptoms, eventually, you might be getting a serious condition.

Here I would like to discuss what cold sensitivity is and how to treat it to prevent severe conditions.

What is Cold Sensitivity?

Cold sensitivity happens when you have poor circulation down to the capillary blood, which is the small tiny blood vessels in the tips of hands and feet.

No matter what the environment, even in the summertime, you get cold hands and feet with this condition.

The causes of Cold sensitivity

Daily lifestyle is significantly involved in poor circulation.  Let’s take a look at the main causes.

Lack of Exercises

Lack of Exercise leads to cold sensitivity

If you don’t exercise, your body’s metabolism slows down, and it causes poor blood circulation. Also, muscle mass is critical because you won’t create heat and warm up your body well.

In particular, women have less muscle mass than men, so it is more difficult to generate heat, and they tend to be sensitive to cold.  Because women have periods every month, the uterus and ovaries block blood flow and lose blood, resulting in poor blood flow that can’t reach the extremities.

Improper Clothing

Wearing light clothing such as skirts in colds weather makes your body cold.  Also, Tight clothing cuts disturb blood circulation.

Aging causes cold feet and sensitive to cold

Older people feel cold because they cannot generate heat due to aging. Their muscle mass and the organ function lower; for example, frequent urination, stiff shoulder, and back pain should be released by warming your body.

Eating junk food makes your body cold

Eating too many cold foods and sweets, fast foods, snacks, causes your body cold.

And lack of minerals and vitamins with unreasonable dietary restrictions can cause your blood to become muddy and poor circulation.

Stress ruins your nervous system and blood circulation

Excessive stress causes insufficient blood flow and causes poor circulation. In addition, if stress and pressure ruin you for a long time, the autonomic nerves get imbalanced and lose control of your body temperature.

The Autonomic nerves play a big role in controlling body temperature in the body. When you are hot, it expands the blood vessels to let the body temperature down, and when you are cold, it shrinks the blood vessels so that the body temperature keep the same.

However, nowadays, people live in an environment with AC, our feeling of “hot” and “cold” becomes dull and does not work well. It constricts the capillaries and causes cold sensitivity.

Smoking constricts blood vessels leading to poor circulation and cold feet

Smoking rapidly constricts blood vessels and reduces blood flow, leading to coldness.

Constipation / diarrhea

The digestive problems also lead to lower blood flow and coldness.

Thyroid Hormone Imbalance

People who have thyroid hormone imbalance like hypothyroidism or Hashimoto disease tend to get cold hands and feet.  Also, When you have menopause, your women’s hormones are lowering, and you lose control of the body temperature.  You get cold feet even though you have hot flashes (Heat Sign).

Iron deficiency anemia

Women tend to get deficient in iron. Mainly, they lose blood from menstruation, so they must take more iron than necessary. If this condition persists, it will eventually lead to anemia.

Anemia is a condition in which there are few red blood cells in the blood, and the red blood cells play a role in carrying oxygen, resulting in fatigue, dizziness, and cold feet.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective

Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective for cold sensitivity

There are five types of diagnoses that give you cold feet and cold sensitivity.

  1. Cold in the middle burner, Spleen & stomach (digestive organs)
  2. Liver Qi Stagnation
  3. Blood Stasis
  4. Kidney Yang Deficiency
  5. Blood Deficiency

Cold in the Middle Burner

Because the digestive systems like the spleen and stomach create the post-natal energy from food, it has to be consistently warm.  However, if your stomach gets cold, you also get diarrhea, fatigue, low appetite occur with cold feet.

Liver Qi Stagnation

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the liver is the organ that regulates Qi (energy) and stores blood.  It is easily affected by stress.  Once Liver energy gets stuck, it disharmonized blood circulation causing cold hands and feet.  It is also associated with irritability, depression, abdominal distention, constipation, etc.

Blood Stasis

When your body temperature goes down, the body’s metabolism also goes down and creates stasis of the blood and poor circulation. Blood stasis signs are heart palpitation, nerve pain, dizziness, red faces, dark circles under eyes, purple lips, etc.

Kidney Yang Deficiency

Spleen creates post-natal energy, and Kidney Yang energy facilitates the function of Spleen.  Yang is like fire, and if there is no fire, symptoms occur such as the cold lower back, fatigue, frequent urination, etc.

Blood Deficiency

Blood is warm and moist, and Qi (energy) carries blood.  Once there is no blood, it’s no energy to bring blood to the end of the limbs.  Also, it’s associated with dizziness, fatigue, dry skin, etc.

The parasympathetic nerves work to widen blood vessels and improve blood circulation. Let’s relax and warm from the core of your body.
