Do You Know How Chinese Medicine Treats Hot Flashes?

How TCM Sees Hot Flashes in Menopause and Its treatment

Are you suffering from frequent hot flashes because of menopause?

The symptom is prevalent among older women between 45 and 55 years of age. Besides the hot flashes, if you experience night sweats, virginal dryness, sleeping difficulty, mood swing, and loss of sex drive, you are more likely to be having menopause disorder.

Don’t feel alone if you are experiencing the symptoms because, according to a study, 85 % of postmenopausal women have experienced a menopause-related symptom in their lifetime.

The frequency and the duration of hot flashes are different for people, but they should be the lowest possible. In general, hot flashes in menopause can keep for 5 to 10 years.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine’s point of view, menopause disorder is primarily caused by an imbalance of yin and yang in your body, called “Yin Deficiency.” “Yin Deficiency” is the state where yin(a negative side) is losing its power, but yang( a positive side) remains its power, and the imbalance makes heat in your body. 

Here’re four types of yin yang states in which you probably see yourself if you suffer from hot flashes. Each class has different symptoms and different advice.   

Type1 (Yin Deficiency Fire) for hot flashes:

Symptoms: hot flashes on the upper body, red face, sweaty, dizziness, vertigo, ringing in ears, sleep disorder, feeling heavy body, thirsty, red tongue, and little tongue moss.

・Avoid spicy and fried food, spices, ginger.
・Recommended food: sesame, honey, corn, cucumbers, watermelon, lotus seeds.
・Drink jujube tea or goji berry tea
・Press “LV3” pressure point (See the picture below) 3 mins before sleep

Type 1 for hot flashes - Yin Deficiency Fire

Type2 (Yin & Yang Deficiency):

Symptoms: hot flashes on upper body, sweaty, slim/slender, anxiety, numb on hands and feet, sleep disorder

The treatment is quite tricky if you are this type, so you are better off visiting an acupuncturist near you to get the proper advice. You may be seeing improvements by changing your diet and trying natural Chinese herbs.

Here are some natural remedies:
・Recommended food: peanuts, walnuts, yams, lamb & mutton, and ginger
・Drink goji berry, jujube tea, and lotus tea
・Pressing “UB23” pressure point in the morning for 3 mins

Type 2 for hot flashes - Yin & Yang Deficiency

Type3 (Qi & Yin Deficiency):

Symptoms: hot flashes in the evening, red cheeks, shortness of breath, cold intolerance, night sweats, loss of appetite, fatigue, constipation or diarrhea, tongue with teeth marks

・Belly breathing for 5 – 10 mins twice after waking up and before going to bed
・Recommended food and beverage: mushrooms, yams, goji berry tea, ginseng tea with honey, etc.
・Pressing “Zusanli” pressure point three times a day

Type 3 for hot flashes - Qi & Yin Deficiency

Type4 (Heart & Spleen deficiency):

Symptoms: irritation, dizziness, sleep disorder, waking up middle of nights, fatigue, shortness of breath, pale face, dark color of a tongue but the light color of tongue moss

・Avoid food that makes your body cool, such as tomatoes, bananas, cucumbers, crabs.
・Refrain from spicy, fried, cold, and raw food.
・Eat meat(beef, chicken, pork), yams, rice, jujube
・Pressing “Zusanli”, “Sp10”, “UB23 UB21”  acupressure points

Type 4 for hot flashes - Heart & Spleen Deficiency
