If you are a woman, you probably have experienced the effects of PMS once in your life as a study shows up to 90% of women experienced it, and 10% of them had severe one (PMDD).

PMS often occurs prior 1 – 2 weeks to menstruation, and it not only negatively affects mental health but also work-productivity.

If you have the following symptoms, you are probably experiencing PMS.

・Acne / pimples
・Joint pain
・Bloated Stomach
・Dry mouth
・Breast pain
・Craving for sugar and salty food
・Getting emotional for no reason
・Brain fog

In the perspective of Oriental Medicine, PMS is triggered by an imbalance of hormones.

As we look different from others, our constitution type is different as well.

Here’re constitutional types and natural remedies for each type.

Type1 (Liver Qi Stagnation):

symptom: bloated stomach, breast pain, anxiety, dark blood when the period

If you see the symptoms above, your energy flow (called “Qi” in Oriental Medicine) in your body is stuck and should be more smooth to relieve your PMS.

Relaxing your body by exercising lightly, meditating, and having citrus fruits like oranges and lemons in your diet are effective natural remedies.

If you are a tea drinker, rose tea is recommended.

Type2 (Liver Fire Rising):

Symptom: Irritation, anxiety, depression, vertigo, loss of appetite, bitter taste in the mouth, early menstruation.

If you are this type, you may suffer from mental health issues.

The effective way is to stretch your body, especially your hamstring and side of your body.

We recommend eating tomatoes, cucumbers, bananas, celery, carrots, apples, and eggs in your diet.

Goji berry tea is good for this type.

Avoid alcohol and stop smoking if you do.

Type3 (Qi & Blood Deficiency):

Symptom: dizziness, light headache, insomnia, pale face, fatigue, tiny amount of period blood

You may have a weak stomach which causes a lack of energy in your body.

As a natural remedy, you should consume less cold, raw, processed food instead of warm food.

The recommended food for includes yams, white rice, meat, mushrooms, and beans.

In addition, keeping your lower ab warm is essential to recover your stomach.

Type4 (Blood Deficiency):

Symptom: itchy skin before period, hard to fall asleep, tiny amount of period blood, late menstrual cycle.

It is the most common type, iron deficiency.

As a solution, you are better off avoiding spicy food.

Drinking coffee prevents absorbing iron in your body, so drink jujube tea instead.

Your diet should contain iron-rich food such as black sesame, black beans, walnut, spinach, beef, chicken, lamb, and mutton.

The following natural remedies are recommended for all types:

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine-containing beverages.
  • Consume less salty, sweet, greasy, dairy, processed food.
  • Do moderate exercises such as jogging, walking, and yoga.
  • Minimize your stress by doing your hobbies.

Even if you try these natural remedies and don’t see any improvements, I recommend you trying natural Chinese herbs.
